Members at our Cornerstone Senior Centre aged 50 years and above help to run the shop. They are called “SuperSenior” volunteers. As one of them puts it, volunteering at the shop is “a way for them to give back to society and interact with the community”. Confidence is gained and self-esteem is built up as our SuperSenior volunteers give their time and efforts to help others and themselves.

Many domestic helpers send purchases from the shop back to their families in their homeland. This is made possible as the items can be purchased at reasonable and low prices.

Friendships are established amongst customers and volunteers. Migrant workers staying in the surrounding worker dormitories frequent the shop on a regular basis. The workers can purchase items as low as $2 each. The shop also recently started to offer printing and photocopying services to meet their needs.

Pop Up Barn

As a form of community outreach, we organised several Pop Up Barn sessions in 2022 for several groups islandwide. The sessions were held at various recreation centres for the migrant workers, and Macpherson & Aljunied area for low-income families living in rental flats. A special shopping spree session was also organised for our beneficiaries at Gladiolus Place, a residential refuge for teenage girls. The teenage girls and low-income families were given $30 worth of shopping vouchers each to purchase items from the Pop Up Barn.

It has been a fruitful year in 2022, and we like to thank our donors, customers and volunteers for all the support given to The Barn.
